UtilitySWITCH

Simple Demand Side Management. Addable to any UtilitySMART package

Are you running an energy efficient operation?

Energy is one of the crucial resources for any business. Rising energy costs, increasing demand, volatile energy markets, and strict enforcement of government policies are some of the propelling factors that have led many organizations to find smarter ways for monitoring, controlling, and saving on energy and emissions.

Monitoring energy usage across your whole organization is a daunting task and often ends up in silos of data. In today’s connected world, the energy future will be inexorably linked to Internet of Things (IoT). The need of the hour is an intelligent, simple to use Energy Management System (EnMS) that combines monitoring and demand reduction in one integrated package ……UtilitySMART with UtilitySWITCH onboard.

Why use UtilitySWITCH?

Actively save costs & reduce emissions. A UtilitySWITCH event was monitoring at site level by UtilitySMART.  A 20kW Compressor is “UtilitySWITCH’ed” OFF during the 3-hour Red Zone/Triad period and this event happened every workday for those 3 hours (or any 3-hours on day-rate tariff on non-Passthrough contracts). Net result, £6,100 4 tonnes of carbon are saved every year. A 6 month ROI.

Demand Side Management (DSM)

Time of Use/TRIAD and Day rate tariffs are meant to encourage customers to shift their consumption to off-peak times and thus balance demand. On paper everyone benefits from this change. Energy producers don’t need to build expensive peak stations, distributors are required to carry out less maintenance on the grid, customers can save on their bills and carbon emissions are lowered. With the advent of smart platforms such as UtilitySMART & SWITCH, this new approach to energy is starting to take off globally.

What does UtilitySWITCH consist of?

There are 3 main elements to UtilitySWITCH

Our on-site IoT based relay hardware that’s fully integrated into the UtilitySMART Monitoring package. Turn Your systems On or Off from Anywhere – over Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G

Remotely controlled breakers or Smart Plugs/Light Switches, that allow switching of connected loads from 1kW to 45kW.

Our software platform that offers switching now, switching via a simple to use 7-day rotating Scheduler and rules-based switching, e.g. when Peak Demand nears your contracted capacity limits switch certain non-operational loads off.

Fast ROI

UtilitySWITCH is packaged in 3-relay modules that are available as an integral part of our Auditor range of on-site Monitoring hardware. This IoT (Internet of Things) platform provides huge cost benefits over older more traditional BMS systems. Our typical ROI is often less than 12-months, never more than 24.

An example would be a 6-month ROI, based on a 3-relay installed package that can switches a 5kW load every weekday during the 3-hours Red Zone TOU/Triad period, 4 hours at night & 6-hours every weekend.

What can be UtilitySWITCH’ed?

Any site system that operates from 1 to 45kW/64A, single or 3-phase can be controlled by UtilitySWITCH. Typical switched loads range from external, warehouse or office lighting, compressors, chillers, fans, fridges, pumps or mains supplied equipment’s.

UtilitySWITCH also works with BMS packages. UtilitySWITCH scheduling can also control BMS via site-connection to I/O units providing a set of instructions that are interpreted by the BMS to switch loads on, off, up or down.

Scheduling load switching

The UtilitySWITCH platform provides a 7-day repeatable schedule that’s simple to setup, use and report on (what has switched, when and for how long). Switch event setup, event override and on-going schedule adjustments are separated from the Schedule views and report generation abilities so your site operations aren’t interrupted by non-authorised staff.

Over-ride of “in-flight” UtilitySWITCH EVENT

UtilitySWITCH recognises that operational circumstances sometimes need to over-ride the ability to reduce costs and emissions during the allocated equipment OFF times. We’ve built in the ability to stop or start a switched load that maybe in the midst of UtilitySWITCH event directly via the browser-based software.

It will take 2-3 seconds from the mouse initiated switch for the load to revert to the selected on or off condition. The software will then indicate if your instruction has been received and acted upto.

UtilitySWITCH over-ride can either be a “one-off”, or you can put the scheduled switching event “on-hold” until you decide it’s appropriate to re-activate it.

Sunrise-Sunset

Sometimes you’ll need the ability to simply switch loads on or off at local sunset or sunrise times. We provide the ability for you.

Select the Auditor package and Switch number (1, 2 or 3)

Insert the postcode of the location of the Auditor package,

Select sunset/sunrise control and does UtilitySWITCH turn the load on or off at sunrise/sunset. There is also an offset feature to say turn the load off x-hour(s) before or after sunrise/sunset.

and we do the rest …. energy simply managed.

Out of Working Hours

You may want to switch equipment on or off when working hours come to an end or start up. UtilitySWITCH simplifies this by asking to provide the site non-working hours and providing you the ability to simply select which load you want to dispatch to these rules and we do the rest…. energy simply managed.

Rules-based Switching

There will be times when you want to turn your site loads on or off when a certain event happens the UtilitySMART can detect. This rules-based or “trigger, rule, function” ability automates the switching and savings event. For example: when the site kVA demand level rises to 90% of the contracted capacity limit (e.g. 100kVA) due to EV Charging turn Compressor 1 off, when the site kVA demand drops to 80% of the contracted capacity limit … or EV Charging ceases, turn Compressor 1 on.

Setting these rules based events up is a simple and quick process, and when they happen you’ll be instantly notified by email for audit or an override.

Getting UtilitySWITCH’ed

In order to engage in Demand Side Management, the first requirement is to carry out an in-depth analysis of onsite consumption: this clarifies the peculiarities of each individual site and whether consumption habits can be optimised without impacting on operational output or unreasonable changes to occupant comfort levels.

Envisij and our capable partners will work with you to identify and work up a Switching plan that suits your site and it’s purpose.

Whenever a change in habits is not feasible or simply not sufficient to achieve the desired cost reductions, the on-site installation can initiate changes to any on-site:

  • Batteries (BESS – battery energy storage systems)
  • Renewable source systems (solar, wind)
  • Cogeneration systems such as CHP
