energy monitoring
leads to 38% cost reduction

By implementing advanced energy monitoring, Intelligent Gas and Power and Envisij uncovered that an industrial campus was being overcharged by 38%. The findings led to a £230,000 refund from the supplier and a major reduction in ongoing energy costs.

PROJECT CHALLENGE:

One of their clients, a large industrial campus, had been in a long-standing dispute with their energy supplier about suspected overcharging for their electricity use. Despite the client’s concerns, the supplier denied any errors, leading to a stalemate that lasted several years. Intelligent Gas and Power suggested implementing advanced energy monitoring to verify what the client’s actual consumption
registered as.

  •  The industrial campus had multiple transformers (11kVa to 415v) and needed to track power usage per tenant, especially outside working hours.

  • The client required a comparison between actual energy usage and billed consumption, integrating half-hourly (HH) data from the site meter with sub-metered data which captures more granular measurements such as voltage, load, current (amps) and individual circuit consumption.

  • Sub-metered data needed to be combined to show total actual site consumption.

BACKGROUND

Intelligent Gas and Power is an energy broker that works with commercial, industrial and public sector clients to help them get the best possible solutions for their energy needs. They partner with Envisij to help their clients gain clear, real-time insights into their energy usage at the site (half-hourly) meter level.

Envisij collaborated with the client’s facilities management team to identify monitoring points across the site that allowed the client to understand tenant-based consumption at block level and overall site consumption using the same hardware.

Intelligent Gas and Power also organised for the half-hour data from the contracted Meter Operator/Data Collector (MOP/DC) to be electronically transferred to Envisij via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) daily.

Envisij’s Energy Analytics dashboard visually compared both the site half-hourly meter data (used by the supplier to bill) and the combined total of the 3 sub-monitoring points on site that constituted total site consumption.

Results

  • The data analysis revealed a significant discrepancy: actual site consumption (yellow trace) was 38% lower than the supplier’s billed consumption (red trace).

  • The client monitored data for several months to establish a consistent trend before presenting their findings to the energy supplier.

  • The client monitored energy usage for a year to gather consistent data, which provided clear evidence of the discrepancy. Once the findings were presented, the case was escalated and the issue was resolved within three months, leading to a settlement.

  • Despite the compelling evidence, the supplier initially disputed the findings. Confident in the accuracy of their circuit-level monitoring data, the client escalated the case to the Energy Ombudsman.

  • The Ombudsman recommended a supplier audit of the half-hourly meter installation. The audit uncovered a long-standing setup error in the meter.

  • The client received a £230,000 refund from the energy supplier.

  • The image illustrates energy consumption before and after the half-hourly meter correction.

“The implementation of the Envisij energy management platform was a game-changer. The granular, half-hourly metering data it provided was pivotal. Within weeks, the platform clearly highlighted the discrepancies, giving us the precise, undeniable evidence required to confront the supplier.”
